Timur Turlov became Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the UN Global Compact in Central Asia
SynopsisChief Executive Officer of Freedom Holding Corp. Timur Turlov has assumed the position of Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the UN Global Compact in Central Asia, established to effectively address cross-border issues related to water, environment, hunger and poverty, infrastructure, energy and food security.
This was announced at a meeting of the Committee held today in Almaty.
The UN Global Compact is a voluntary initiative launched by the United Nations in 2000 to encourage businesses and organisations around the world to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies and practices. The UN Global Compact is based on ten universally recognised principles that cover four key areas: human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
In 2023, Freedom Holding Corp. became a signatory to the UN Global Compact, committing to implement its ten principles, and joined the Advisory Committee as a permanent member. In August last year, the Freedom Shapagat Special Corporate Foundation was established to centralise the holding company’s philanthropic and sponsorship activities related to the promotion of sustainable development. Over the past six months, the Fund has channelled more than KZT 5 billion for these purposes. In addition, a large-scale internal ESG transformation of the holding was initiated with the aim of becoming a regional benchmark of leadership in sustainable development in terms of integrating ESG principles into its own corporate environment.
